About Steel Pipes
Steel pipes are long, hollow Pipes that are used for a variety of purposes. Stainless Steel pipe and Pipes have excellent corrosion resistance and smooth finishing characteristics. The corrosion resistance of the welded steel pipe is the same as the base metal and the strength higher than the base metal. For these reasons, they are used in demanding industries.

What is the meaning of SCH 40 in a pipe?
Sch40 in a pipe indicates tensile strength, 40 kg pressure. It is indicated through standard thickness of 4.0mm.
ANSI B36.10 wall thickness: Sch10, Sch20, Sch30, Sch40, Sch60, Sch80, Sch100, Sch120, Sch140, Sch160 ten levels.
What is the difference between sch 40 & sch 80 Pipe?
Sch 40 and sch 80 pipe are made from the same material. The difference in structure lies in the thickness of pipe wall; the higher the schedule, the thicker the wall of the pipe.
Usage | The thicker the wall of the pipe, the stronger it is to both outside forces and internal pressure. If there is a requirement for a stronger pipe than the standard strength sch 40, investigator use sch 80 pipe. |
Diameter | The outside diameter remains the same regardless of schedule. Sch 40 and sch 80 pipe use the same fittings and same points of entry, making them interchangeable in jobs that don’t need a heavier walled pipe. Weight |
Weight | Sch 40 pipe weights less per foot than sch 80 pipe, which makes it easier to install, especially in long runs. |
Cost | More material are used in schedule 80 pipe which makes it more costly to produce and more expensive to the end user. In applications where extra strength isn’t a large concern, schedule 40 pipe is a less expensive and alternative to it. |
Meaning of Schedule 40 pipe?
Based on the NPS and schedule of a pipe, the pipe outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness can be obtained from reference tables such as those below, which are based on ASME standards B36.10M and B36.19M. For example, NPS 14 Sch 40 has an OD of 14 inches and a wall thickness of 0.437 inches (11.1 mm).
NPS OD Schedule # Wall Thickness ID. 1.000” 1.315” SCH 40 0.133” 1.049” (approx.) 1.000” 1.315” SCH 80 0.179” 0.957” (approx.) pipes are specified by using the NPS and sch numbers. It is the schedule number that shows the approximate inside diameter.
What are Pipe Schedules?
The schedule number on pipe is related to the thickness of the pipe wall as the number increases, the wall thickness becomes thicker.
The actual wall thickness will be different but the schedule number can be the same on different pipe size. Below is the examples of it.
- 1.000 inch x Sch 40 Pipe – actual wall thk is 0.133”
- 1.000 inch x Sch 80 Pipe – actual wall thk is 0.179”
- 2.000 inch x Sch 40 Pipe – actual wall thk is 0.145”
- 2.000 inch x Sch 80 Pipe – actual wall thk is 0.218”

There are various schedule numbers which are used on pipes, such as Sch 5, 5S, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, STD, XS, and XXS. The most common sch’s used are STD, SCH 40 and SCH 80.
What does Nominal Pipe Size or NPS mean?
NPS size represents the approximate inside diameter of the pipe; if the schedule number on a set size is changed, it does affect the inside diameter (ID) but not the outside diameter (OD). The American Standard Association replaced the used Iron Pipe Sizing with Nominal Pipe Sizing. This North American standard is used for high or low pressures and temperature pipes.
