The high temperature strength of Stainless Steel 317L Seamless Tube is generally expressed in terms of their “creep strength” – the ability of the material to resist distortion over long term exposure to a high temperature. In this regard, the austenitic Stainless Steel 317L Welded Tubes are particularly good. Stainless Steel 317L EFW Tubes are also stipulating allowable working stresses of each grade at a range of temperatures. The low carbon versions of the standard austenitic Stainless Steel 317L ERW Tubes have reduced strength at high temperature so are not generally used for structural applications at elevated temperatures.
Stainless Steel 317L Round Tubes has excellent carbon contents for these applications, which results in significantly higher creep strengths. Stainless Steel 317L Square Tube has good oxidation resistance due to their high chromium contents, and suffers from embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above about 350 Degree C, so they are restricted to applications below this. Both martensitic and precipitation hardening families of Stainless Steel 317L Rectangular Tubes have high strengths achieved by thermal treatments.
Exposure of Stainless Steel 317L Electropolish Tubes at temperatures exceeding their heat treatment temperatures will result in permanent softening, so again these are seldom used at elevated temperatures. Stainless Steel 317L Instrumentation Tubes have lower resistance to oxidation and hence lower useful operating temperatures.
